Unable to download from camera

Using the freeware edition of cam2pc, I am unable to download photos from my camera (Canon Powershot G3).
I get the following error message: "Error while getting list of files."
Can someone please explain and advise?

Did you download the Canon camera add-on? Did you run the configuration wizard? Which mode are you using: PTP or Canon?

I have installed the Canon Camera Plugin and the Canon WIA Driver.
Are these covered by the term "addon"?
As for PTP or Canon, I simply don't know what you are refferring to. I'm a newbie with little knowledge of these matters. Can you please inform me?

Addendum:
I've just checked the list of compatible Canon camera types, and the G3 is not among them.
A program called ZoomBrowser is bundled with the G3, and it works very well, but it uses up several gigabytes of disc space.
Can you, perhaps, recommend another camera download application which would work with the G3?
